Kasauli is a charming quaint little hill station about 12 kms from the Shimla-Kalka road. Its colonial ambience is reinforced by cobbled paths, quaint shops, gabled houses with charming facades and scores of neat little gardens and orchards. Mixed forests of chir-pine, Himalayan oak and huge horse chestnuts surround Kasauli. Its narrow roads slither up and down the Himachal hillsides and offer some magnificent vistas.
Kasauli is a pleasant alternative to staying in Shimla; it is devoid of its crowds and is still close enough. There are numerous lovely walks around Kasauli and one can enjoy the beauty of the hills and the riot of color of the wild flowers that grow in profusion along the hill slopes.
Some of the famous personalities known to have taken refuge in Kasauli's tranquil solitudes for a recharge are Khushwant Singh, Salman Rushdie, Ruskin Bond and Gulshan Nanda.
Kasauli remains clean, pristine and untouched, primarily because it is an army cantonment and deliberately kept devoid of city attractions.
It's an irresistible small town (height 1,927m) developed by the British in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh.

PLACES IN AND AROUND KASAULI
This salubrious hill station of Kasauli is famous for its different moods. The period between April and June is known for wild blooms and their astounding aroma. The fog clouds which are a rule of the day during the monsoons, pave the way for romantic moments. The snowfall between January and February makes the hill station a veritable goldmine for rufflednerves.
Monkey Point: The highest point in Kasauli called Monkey Point, is just 4-km from the Kasauli bus stand. The Monkey Point commands an excellent view of the distant plains of Chandigarh region and the river Satluj, tracing a silvery trail through the scene. A small temple is also situated on the top of the hill, which is dedicated to Lord Hanuman.
Sanawar: Just 6-km from Kasauli, Sanawar houses one of the best schools in the country. The Lawrence school is almost one hundred-years-old and a major attraction of the town
Dharampur: Just 15-km from Kasauli on the National Highway No.22, Dharampur is situated. Amidst the healthy air of the fragrant pines, Dharampur has one of the best hospitals in India for the cure of tuberculosis. It is also connected by Kalka-Shimla railway line.
Sabathu: A little cantonment town has a Gurkha fort built in the early years of the 19th century, situated at an altitude of 1,437m. This cantonment town quartered the British soldiers at the time of British Empire. A diversion road from Dharampur 15-km away leads to the Sabathu town.
Dagshai: Another beautiful and neat little cantonment at an altitude of 1,925m just 19-km from Kasauli.

The closest railhead is at Kalka (37kms). From Kalka one can proceed by bus to Kasauli, less than an hour away or if one has the time, take the Himalayan Queen, A toy train, from Kalka to Dharampur (15 kms from Kasauli)and get pleasantly surprised to find how luxurious its chair car is.
Road
There are buses from Delhi, Chandigarh, Kalka and Shimla(73km).
